Inside bets explained in roulette

Roulette bets fall into two categories: inside wagers and outside wagers. While outside bets cover large groups of numbers at once and win more often, inside bets are much more customisable and offer the biggest payouts. Here, we’ll take a good look at all the different real money roulette wagers you can make on the inside layout.

What is an inside bet?

Inside wagers are made by selecting one or more individual numbers on the interior grid of the betting layout. Depending on precisely where you place your chips, with one stake you can cover either a single number, a pair of numbers, or a cluster of up to six adjacent numbers.

So while each outside bet covers a fixed set of pockets, inside betting allows you to wager on as many or as few as you like. The more numbers you include in each wager, the better your chances of winning; but more numbers also means smaller payouts. By betting on fewer pockets at a time, you open up the possibility of hitting the highest-paying winners.

Different types of roulette inside bets

There are seven different kinds of inside bet available on a single-zero European roulette table:

Single number
Also called a straight-up bet, this one does exactly it says on the tin. Make sure to place your chips directly over the number on the layout, not touching any lines.

Split
A bet on two adjacent numbers. Place your chips on the line between the two numbers.

Inside bets on a European roulette tableStreet
A bet on three consecutive numbers in a single row. Place your chips on the line at the very end of the row, on the edge of the inside layout.

Corner
A bet on four adjacent numbers. Place your chips where the lines intersect between all four numbers.

Six line
A bet on six consecutive numbers across two rows. Place your chips on the T intersection where the two rows meet the edge of the layout.

Trio
A bet on either zero, one and two, or zero, two and three. Place your chips on the T intersection where the two numbers join the zero.

First four
A bet on zero, one, two and three. Place your chips on the T intersection where zero and one meet the edge of the layout, like a street bet.

American roulette bets

Because it features an additional ‘double zero’ pocket (00), American roulette offers a couple of unique wagers not found in European and French roulette games. These are available in place of the first four and trio bets:

Basket
A bet on zero, one and two; zero, double zero and two; or double zero, two and three. Like a trio in European roulette, place your chips on the T intersection between the zero panels and the first row of numbers.

Top line
A bet on zero, double zero, one, two and three. Like the first four in Euro roulette, place your chips on the T intersection where zero and one meet the edge of the layout.

Inside roulette bets offer some of the best payouts in the casino. For example: if you were to bet $10 on a single number and win, you would collect $350. That’s much a bigger return on investment than you get with other popular table games such as blackjack and baccarat.

As the tables above show, European roulette is far better value than the American equivalent. That’s because while the payouts for each are the same (with the exception of the top line bet), the presence of the double zero in US roulette gives the house a significant additional advantage.

For example: the probability of winning a straight-up bet in single-zero roulette is 1 in 37, or 2.70 per cent; but the extra pocket in double-zero roulette changes that figure to 1 in 38, or 2.63 per cent. The more numbers there are on the wheel, the worse the odds become for the player.
